While talking with Variety, Shindler discussed how well-suited Safe was for Netflix because it's the exact kind of show you'll want to marathon. Red previously provided Netflix with Happy Valley, but this will be their first original collaboration. The series was made by Red, a U.K.-based production company run by Nicola Shindler. Though they seem to be safe within their gated community, everything changes when Jenny sneaks out to a party and vanishes. Tom is a pediatric surgeon who recently lost his wife to cancer and is now raising his daughters Jenny and Carrie alone. Hall's character is in the center of the storm, though the actor told Variety that it was a departure from past projects in that Tom is "more or less a normal person." Though wild things are happening around him, they are not happening within him, as was the case with his very famous role on Dexter. The fact that the Netflix series doesn't seem to be based on real events might make its twists and turns all the more surprising, because viewers will have no source material to tip them off about what happens. It's well-trod territory for television shows can still handle the idea with innovation and creativity, but it's a common premise that's rich with possibility. It appears to be fairly typical of other shows of the same genre, like HBO's recent Big Little Lies: a tight-knit community seems idyllic from the outside but its residents are actually concealing all manner of skeletons in their closets. There's no indication that any real stories served as the basis for Safe, as familiar as the synopsis of the show might seem. It sounds like the kind of complicated case that would spawn a critically acclaimed podcast, but is Safe based on a true story? Is there any real inspiration behind the mystery at its heart? The disappearance of his oldest daughter sets off a chain of events in his community that results in some shocking revelations. Hall will be taking on the role of Tom, a widowed father of two whose seemingly normal life has something darker lurking under the surface. This is the kind of drama in which everyone is keeping secrets - and characters with knitted brows remind each other of that fact -and there are the expected chase scenes, interrogations, and close-ups of a mysterious bank transfer.When Safe premieres on Netflix on May 10, Michael C. Hall brings a worried, intelligent gravity to the central role, and if the drama doesn’t stretch the actor’s range in its opening hours, we know he’s capable of much more, should later installments of “Safe” require a wider variety of emotional colors from him.
As the drama gains momentum over its first two episodes, Amanda Abbington (“Sherlock”) is excellent as a local detective with her own domestic problems, and Marc Warren is terrific as Tom’s wary, acerbic best friend.

But overall, it tends to avoid the sloppy, meandering tendencies of its more prestige-driven TV brethren. “Safe” takes itself a bit too seriously now and then - portentous music cues occasionally crop up in ways that play up the show’s pompous tendencies.
But things begin spinning out of control when a crime occurs, and a resident goes missing. Adults and teens in the community are all hiding secrets, and on the whole, the teens are better at covering their tracks than the grown-ups.
In a leafy, safety-conscious subdivision, grieving widower Tom (Hall) is raising two daughters, one of whom is a teenager and increasingly estranged from her dad. It’s essentially a propulsive nighttime soap opera littered with crimes, well-appointed kitchens, and surveillance cameras everywhere. But in its first two episodes, it delivers on what it promises in its taut opening scenes: It’s a slick portrait of one man’s descent into a nightmare, one that threatens to damage the fragile connections within several families. The good news is “Safe” is a plot-driven drama that doesn’t rely all that much on extensive conversation, and what dialogue it does have is workmanlike at best. Hall’s attempt at an English accent is reasonably successful, even if it sounds a bit forced at times.
